The mausoleum doors lay open, almost mocking, an invitation. I stepped through the shadow with the thick stench of death lingering in the air. Every step I made echoed down the long chilled corridor, I heard hungry vermin scuttling around in the darkness, the faint glow from my weapon was all that kept me from falling into the deception of this place. A sickly pallid green light spilled onto the corridor wall further ahead. I was closing in. I could feel my heart beating harder and faster. My only hope was that he didn’t feel it beating too. I peered around the corner and could see the phylactery in the depths of my vision. I had heard tales of this place as a child. Unspeakable evils. The lich's reign of terror must come to an end. Dust bellowed beneath my feet as I began my descent into the endless darkness. Time itself seemed to have left itself at the doors along with my sense. Each moment a drawn out lifetime. Each breath a vicious struggle. I clutched my weapon and slowly approached the despicable shrine in front of me. The lich can survive the clutches of death itself by placing his soul within an inanimate object. I could feel power swirling around the lifeless hewn corpse. Energy crackled in the air around me. As I raised my hands to deliver the fatal coup de grace, an ice cold chill ran up my spine. The beating stopped. I breathed. One. Last. Time. His dirty fingers scraped through my mind for a name as a faint whisper reached my ear.

“I’ve been waiting.“
