We as humans are predisposed to continually search for the ephemeral; those briefest of moments where we would feel joy, lust, excitement or even rage. It is those most dissatisfied by their exposure to these moments whom I feel likely find themselves following unfamiliar paths; drawn to foreign voices.
We are after all hedonists by nature; primal in our actions and our thoughts; we yearn for pleasure above all else. I can empathise with those who would seek alternative methods to attain this diversion from the monotony of routine. There are many addictive forces in this world and each will walk hand-in-hand with some form of debilitant that slowly eats away at us; after all that is the price we must pay to extend the feelings we want for the most. Those weakest will fall but a minority may find a way to shine bright in these darkest of days. Sometimes the addiction we latch on to can be found within a person; it isn’t rare for someone to have an addictive personality and maybe someone you know is this for you – a dependency; an end to all your means.
We are held back from barriers every day; conformity to rules ingrained through generations. Monogamy is there to further the life expectancy of our race but this too is a restriction on our human nature. We are the most inquisitive of creatures; constantly wanting to taste new flavours so to speak. Across time, throughout vast civilisations, you would struggle to see the word faithful being applicable in any place outside of the church and yet we survived, we prospered. Why is this? Because life finds a way. We will never stop wanting to know if the grass on the other side truly is greener even if we’re told otherwise.
The world is vast and deep; 'it’s not inside your books' as Gandalf says; those love stories and adventurous motion pictures we consume every day can be ours; it is all out there. We as a generation live out the majority of our days deep in the subconscious – off wandering and wondering what the future can dangle in front of us. Our existence in the context of time is extraordinarily short, a mere blip, and it’s time to start exploring yourself and the world we share. We all want more, so run, and don’t look back until you find it.
